All Souls’ Day

Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

Each year, La Côte Church seeks to offer services that address the reality that some of our congregation members suffer long-term grief and loss, living with emotional wounds that are sometimes very hard to bear, and in some cases with trauma.
Those services include next Sunday’s, for All Souls Day, but also Remembrance Sunday, Safeguarding Sunday, Blue Christmas, Holy Saturday and Refugee Sunday.
All these services provide opportunities to acknowledge the pain of grief, loss and trauma. Yet they affirm that this pain is not the last word and that Jesus is present with us in that grief, loss and trauma.

These services are not only intended to support and comfort those of us who live with the effects of grave illness and death of loved ones, damaged or broken relationships, deep grief, loss, or trauma. They also allow other congregation members to share bonds of mutual understanding, solidarity and compassion with those who are suffering. The liturgy shared in these services can be powerful and transformative. And the services can strengthen the depth and quality of pastoral care, demonstrating to everyone present the importance our church community places on spiritual, emotional and psychological wellbeing of all.

A poem for All Souls’ Day …
Let's go our old way
by the stream, and kick the leaves
as we always did, to make
the rhythm of breaking waves.

This day draws no breath –
shows no colour anywhere
except for the leaves - in their death
brilliant as never before.

Yellow of Brimstone Butterfly,
brown of Oak Eggar Moth –
you'd say. And I'd be wondering why
a summer never seems lost

if two have been together
witnessing the variousness of light,
and the same two in lustreless November
enter the year's night…

The slow-worm stream - how still!
Above that spider's unguarded door,
look – dull pearls…Time's full,
brimming, can hold no more.

Next moment (we well know,
my darling, you and I)
what the small day cannot hold
must spill into eternity.

So perhaps we should move cat-soft
meanwhile, and leave everything unsaid,
until no shadow of risk can be left
of disturbing the scatheless dead.

Ah, but you were always leaf-light.
And you so seldom talk
as we go. But there at my side
through the bright leaves you walk.

And yet – touch my hand
that I may be quite without fear,
for it seems as if a mist descends,
and the leaves where you walk do not stir.

A WORD OF THANKS FROM CAROLYN

Dear La Côte Church family, it is not often that I am completely lost for words! On Sunday morning, when Georges Mills presented me with such a special 60 th birthday gift – I was floored.

I continue to be deeply moved by your generosity and kindness, and by certain people’s ingenuity and squirrelling secrets behind the scenes! Over the coming days I look forward to exploring the exceptional collection of Relais & Chateaux hotels and restaurants and will take great delight in planning some mini escapades.

According to the website - this could be me following some“pampered perfection” at a spa 😊 !!

Thank you too for your kind words and greetings written in the pretty notebook that came with the gift. I have so enjoyed reading them. I look forward to opening my cards in due course, when back from a short visit to see my parents in Sussex, UK.

I have been thanking God for the gift of La Côte Community and all that we share together in the roller coaster adventure of faith and life.

Thank you too for the gorgeous flowers decorating the church for our All Saints celebration – and for the delicious array of cakes that paired magnificently with crémant and coffee! We could teach the Relais & Chateaux a thing or two!

With loving thanks,

Carolyn
