The greatest success of my garden this year: pattypan squash.

Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

This coming Sunday, Louise Burrows is helping us give thanks for creation, by displaying creative expressions of wonder from among our community – photos, paintings, fabrics. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and to Louise for patiently curating our offerings.

When we think of awe and wonder in creation, we may be tempted to think of the more eye-catching splendour of mountains and glistening, pristine lakes. Equally, we may be delighted by our vegetable plots – healthy crops of leeks, courgettes and tomatoes!

This last summer, in spite of some disappointments, Louise found herself enjoying an unexpected wonder in a type of squash… and incidentally, she makes it into a mean and very tasty soup! I’ll let her explain.

“When I was planning my vegetable garden for 2025, I knew that it would be no ordinary year. My father had just died, and my mother was going to need my support, which would mean being away from my garden for extended periods of time, so I decided to do things a little differently. I chose a less ambitious range of seeds and included varieties I hadn’t grown before, like pattypan squash, feeling that I had less to lose than usual. Little did I know at that point that life held even more disruption in store, including a move back to the UK to plan, meaning that the garden got even less attention this year than normal.

My lack of time and attention has had direct consequences on the harvest. I got a fraction of the figs, because, due to my failure to keep them under surveillance, birds took all the fruit from the top of the tree. Many of my tomato plants are only half tied-up and are drooping down under the weight of unripe fruit, which the slugs have been demolishing while still green. I have decided to find a redemptive way of viewing this situation. The birds of the air, who neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, have been fed, and I have been inadvertently loving my slimy enemies (Matthew 6:26, Matthew 5:44).

The pattypan squash, however, have been an enormous success – but I don’t really know what to do with them…”

For more from Louise, do visit her blog: The Inner Garden – A patchwork of offerings from my inner and outer gardens.

Louise also reflects on her favourite part of the Nicene creed and how it inspires her to action in Creation, here.

We hope you can join us to renew our praise for the treasures of Creation.

Warm regards

Carolyn Cooke

Thank you for your Harvest Festival Offerings

Eric Cockshutt and I delivered the Harvest Festival offerings on Monday morning to Les Restos du Cœur in Divonne. Madame Jacqueline Reymond, who is in charge of the Divonne branch of Les Restos association, was there to welcome us and expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Restos association.

As is our custom, we will again this year channel our Divonne Harvest Festival contributions to Les Restos.

I would also like to seize this opportunity to express a huge thank you to those who helped to sort out the various offerings after the service; they did so in record time with remarkable efficiency. Also, it was gratifying to see that the offerings were all well chosen and suited to the needs of Les Restos' recipients.
