Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

This Sunday we will be celebrating Harvest Festival. According to Wikipedia, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times and autumn continues to be a time when we give thanks for God's blessings, particularly for the bounty of food from the land.

Harvest Festival is a lovely celebration, made all the more wonderful by the warmth of late summer, maybe the sense that we’ve managed to scrape a few extra days of good weather, and the sense of abundance which we feel. Don’t forget to bring your gifts for Restos du Coeur!

And yet there is more. Something more profound beneath the surface.

As we thank God for His presence in this marvellous once-a-year event that is the Harvest, we can forget that God is present in all things, great and small. God's power
is manifest in the Harvest, but also in all events, in all moments of our lives.

In The Sacred Journey, Frederick Buechner reflects on how God’s presence is woven into the ordinary fabric of life rather than being confined to religious experiences or sacred spaces. His central point is that God is present everywhere—often hidden in the everyday, the accidental, the painful, and the joyful—and it is only with hindsight, memory, and reflection that we begin to recognize the divine in those moments.

As we give thanks for God’s presence in our glorious harvest this year, I invite us all to spend a moment looking back at the less monumental moments of this last year to see if we can also glimpse God in the still, small, everyday moments. Maybe in the bad times, the pain and the tears. Because He was there too.

Our wonderful church decorating team and our dedicated Sunday School teachers will be preparing some rather splendid scarecrows to decorate the church this Harvest. They will remind us not only of the Harvest but also, beneath the surface, of the scarecrow’s presence at all times, in all weathers, and in all seasons. Just like Jesus, the bread of life, who is present with us whether we notice or not.

Chris Potter

RIP Notices

Revd Mervyn Puleston RIP
We are sad to share with you news of the death of the Revd Mervyn Puleston on 2 Sept at the age of 91.  Mervyn was Chaplain at Holy Trinity Geneva at the time when a small group of us in the Nyon area were inspired by his assisting priest, Fr. Sunipa Tevi, to start monthly services in the area in 1986.  Mervyn returned to preach at the 25th anniversary of La Côte Church in 2012 and we were so pleased to visit him last year in UK.  We remember him with gratitude and affection for his pastoral care, kindness and hospitality. His funeral will take place this Fri. 26th at 12.30 (UK time) in Kidlington, Oxon.  A video will be available afterwards, so please let me know if you would like the link. peta.tracey@lacotechurch.ch

Canon Dr. Robert Crossley RIP
We are also taking this opportunity to let you know that another influential guide to our church community in its early days died on 2 Jan., aged 88.  Robert came over from UK in 2002 to conduct a feasibility study which, along with Mike French's support (then Chaplain of HTG), encouraged us to take the plunge to stand on our own two feet and engage our first Chaplain at La Côte.  This happened a year later, with the arrival of the Revd Paul Holley.  It was such a pleasure to have Robert and his wife, Barbara, with us at that time and to benefit from his wise and gentle counsel.  He continued to take a keen interest in La Côte Church and read the Bulletin!  We send our sympathy and love to Barbara and family.

Stephen Ministry Training

Stephen Ministry is a confidential 1:1 caring ministry and a core element of the Pastoral Care strategy of La Côte.

Training begins on  Thursday 25th September at 7pm (on Zoom) for any who are interested to learn more about how to provide care, and have an interest in being Stephen Ministers.  Training is provided over 20 sessions, mostly online, and includes how to deal with feelings, the art of listening, assertiveness, boundaries, coping with grief, caring for those who are depressed and many other topics.

Stephen Ministry Suisse Romande needs new Stephen Ministers and so please do seriously consider whether this is something you would be interested to explore.  If you have any questions please talk to Jeremy Burrows.
