ERRATUM - UPDATE FOLLOWING A TECHNICAL ISSUE

Dear subscribers,

Due to a technical issue, some of the links in the previous version of our newsletter were not working properly.

Please find the corrected version below.

We thank you for your understanding.

Dear members

July is synonymous with Grand Tours, both for the women’s and men’s professional pelotons.

I was privileged to be at the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Lille on 5 July and follow a day of action which set the tone for a magnificent three weeks of racing that finishes in Paris this Sunday, 27 July. I look forward to being in the French capital to see the riders arrive.

The day before the end of the 112th edition of the Tour de France, the women’s professional peloton sets off for the fourth edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. While the women’s French tour has a shorter history, it is already a not-to-be-missed feature of the UCI Women’s WorldTour. It is the second women’s Grand Tour of the month, coming just two weeks after the Giro d’Italia Women.

At the beginning of July, I was pleased to welcome a delegation from the Japan Keirin Association to our UCI headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland. It was very interesting to talk with the association’s President Mr Hiroshi Kido and General Director Mr Fumihisa Asano and share our visions for the future development of track cycling.

The same week, we had a visit from the Turkish Cycling Federation. I had constructive discussions with Federation President Mr Emin Müftüoğlu and Management Committee member Mr. Mehmet Sarıtaş, reinforcing our collaboration to develop cycling at all levels. I had equally positive exchanges with the President of the Belgian Cycling Federation Tom Van Damme when he came to our offices on 24 July.

As you are all aware, 2025 is a hugely significant year for cycling in Africa, with the UCI Road World Championships being held in Kigali, Rwanda, in September. It was my great pleasure to welcome the President of the Rwandan Cycling Federation Samson Ndayishimiye to our headquarters to discuss the preparations and details of this historic event that sees Africa hosting this event for the first time.

The Federation President also joined us at the seventh stage of the Tour de France between Saint-Malo and Mûr de Bretagne on 11 July which turned the spotlight on African cycling. Twelve young African riders from the UCI World Cycling Centre Africa 2025 strategy – currently training in Brittany – were welcomed onto the sign-in podium and met some of the biggest names in the Tour, including Eritrean Biniam Girmay before the start and stage winner and yellow-jersey wearer Tadej Pogačar at the end. This was an unforgettable day for these young talents who also rode the final lap of the stage and who we will see in action in Kigali in September.

Still on the subject of Kigali, our elective UCI Congress will take place on 25 September during the UCI Road World Championships with the elections for the UCI President and UCI Management Committee. As I am the only candidate for the Presidency I will be honoured to embark on a third four-year term at the helm of our International Federation.

You can find out more about the voting process for the UCI Management Committee in the press release we published on the UCI website on 4 July.

David Lappartient

IOC member

Development of the Women Junior category for class 1 and class 2 events

Of the 148 events listed on the 2025-2026 UCI Cyclo-cross International Calendar in class 1 and class 2, 106 (72%) have added or maintained a separate Women Junior race to their schedule.

The UCI would like to thank these organisers and their National Federations for their efforts.

We are aware that for some nations, the participation of Women Junior athletes is still low, but we are also convinced that offering separate races is the best solution for gradually developing this category and thus ensuring the future of the Women Elite category.

Any organiser of class 1 or class 2 events not including a separate Women Junior race will have to pay an additional fee (for instance for Group 1 nations: 800€).

This difference will be used to fund the development actions of the UCI, especially via the 2025 UCI cyclo-cross training camp, where the majority of participants are from the Women Junior category, as approved by the UCI Management Committee during its meeting of June 2025 in Arzon, France.

This economic model will be maintained for the 2026-2027 season, before the organisation of a Women Junior race becomes mandatory for all class 1 and class 2 events from the 2027-2028 season onwards.

Compliance with Chapter III "Equipment" of part 1 of UCI rules for the upcoming cyclo-cross season

We would like to remind participants that all framesets and wheels used in UCI-sanctioned events must be approved by the UCI, in accordance with article 1.3.001bis of the UCI Regulations. The lists of approved framesets and wheels can be found on the Equipment page of the UCI website.

For the 2025-2026 season, this requirement will be compulsory for all categories at UCI World Cup events and UCI World Championships. The use of non-approved equipment will result in disqualification or the refusal to start the race.

Below is the multi-year implementation plan outlining the timeline for the introduction of this mandatory compliance at different events.

ITA Webinar Series: Building Resilience in Sport

The UCI is pleased to inform you that the educational webinar ‘Building Resilience in Sport' organised by the International Testing Agency (ITA) is available on their YouTube Channel.

This webinar explores the vital role of resilience in supporting clean sport, featuring boxing athlete Ms. Talei Aldiss, from New Zealand. Drawing on insights from a 2022 World Anti-Doping Agency report, it examines how resilience helps athletes navigate common challenges such as injury, stress, and performance pressure without turning to doping.

Ms. Talei Aldiss shares her personal journey in developing resilience, offering practical advice for athletes and their support teams. As resilience is a key factor in maintaining both performance and integrity, understanding its role is essential for all those involved in an athlete’s development.

The UCI strongly encourages you and your members to watch this webinar.

Educating stakeholders with regard to safeguarding is a key action in the primary prevention of violence and abuse in sport. To put safeguarding into practice and ensure it makes a positive difference, it is key for all those involved in cycling to be aware of the importance of safe cycling and have the necessary knowledge to be able to both understand and implement the policies and procedures. This can be achieved by different means, including information leaflets, posters, and guides, but also, most effectively, through education. The dissemination of awareness-raising materials contributes to the improvement of the general understanding of safe cycling as well as mobilising everyone to bring about the necessary changes in attitudes and behaviour. It also contributes to the empowerment of those working in cycling and helps prevent, and respond to, any form of harm or abuse.

Read the Education section (Chapter 10) of the UCI Safeguarding Toolkit for more information.

There is no place in our sport for any form of competition manipulation, and we must be true to our sport.

Cycling must remain free from any manipulation so that athletes can be confident they are taking part in competitions where the rules will be observed and where everybody’s aim is to do their best. Through the UCI’s Fair Cycling campaign, the UCI issued a reminder that we all have a responsibility to protect our sport and the integrity of cycling competitions in line with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Code of conduct and following four simple rules:

  • Don’t bet on your sport
  • Don’t fix, and always do your best
  • Don’t share inside information
  • Always report (via uci.org/speakup)

With this campaign, the UCI raises awareness about all forms of competition manipulation, which is any arrangement aimed at an improper alteration of the result of a cycling event, removing the unpredictable nature of our sport with the goal of obtaining a benefit. Competition manipulation occurs when athletes underperform or lose intentionally, or when officials deliberately make wrong decisions to affect the competition and its results; this could be for financial or other advantage.

Afghanistan Women’s Road Championships: a moving sports event in Les Herbiers

Thanks to a show of solidarity between the UCI, its World Cycling Centre (WCC) and the French Cycling Federation, the Afghanistan Women’s Road Championships were organised in Les Herbiers, France, at the same time as the French National Championships.

The UCI WCC took care of logistics for the event, which had not been organised since 2022 when they were held in and around the UCI WCC in Aigle, Switzerland.

Unable to compete in Afghanistan, the refugee athletes travelled to France from their European bases in Switzerland, Denmark and Italy to race for their national jersey.

Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of this moving event in the article and video published on the UCI website.
