Lush summer fruit… and the fruit of the Spirit
Dear La Côte Church family and friends,
This coming Sunday we will be exploring the freedom to which we are called as Christians.
The apostle lists destructive behaviours which can imprison us. He calls them desires and works of the flesh, which can get a grip on us and mar God’s image in us. Christian author Francis Spufford calls it “the human propensity to mess (he uses a stronger word beginning with F) things up.” The wonderful message of our Christian faith is that we are set free from sin, not because we get it right, but because of God’s abundant grace, enough for everyone, including those whom we deem undeserving! And when any of us find ourselves caught up in addiction, I hope our church community can offer a safe place to share and find acceptance, alongside professional support. Please do let me know if you would like to talk with me or a member of our community.
By contrast to the works of the flesh, Paul reminds the young church in Galatia that they have been set free to fulfil the law “you shall love your neighbour as yourself.” As we allow the power of the Holy Spirit to direct our lives, so we will bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. By God’s grace at work in our weaknesses and our strengths, this fruit of the Spirit will hold out hope and release to our fractured world.
Eternal God, the light of the minds that know you,
The joy of the hearts that love you,
And the strength of the wills that serve you:
Grant us so to know you that we may truly love you,
So to love you that we may truly serve you,
Whose service is perfect freedom;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

This week, our assistant curate Revd Betty Talbot has travelled over to Brussels for an ordination retreat. Six new deacons will be welcomed into ordained ministry at the Diocesan Ordination at the Pro-Cathedral of Holy Trinity Brussels and 8 deacons will be priested across the diocese during this season. Betty, from the monastery, tells me that the 6.00am start with “lauds” is a new challenge!
Please pray for those to be ordained, their families and loved ones, and the chaplaincies which will welcome them.
