Prayers of thanksgiving and for peace

Dear La Côte Church friends and family,

Prayers of thanksgiving: “All things come from you and of your own do we give you.”

In preparation for our Gift Day, we continue with our theme of thanksgiving. Last week I asked you to think about those gifts within yourself for which you are thankful, and which you want to offer back to God. This week I invite you to think about the gifts of others in our church community that have been a blessing to you and/or to others. As you recall both the generous spirit of the givers, and the gifts that they share, I encourage you to offer thanks to God for them.

Once again, please record and store your thanksgiving ideas somewhere, and bring them along to our Gift Day celebration on Sunday 15 June.

Prayers for peace

Last Sunday in our Taize prayer service we sang, “Ubi caritas, et amor, ubi caritas, Deus ibi est.” “Where there is charity and love, there God is.”

As a community, I invite us to join in acts of charity and love through prayer. The nine days between Ascension and Pentecost are traditionally nominated as a “novena”, which is a nine-day period of private or public prayer. This year, the novena booklet prepared by the Thy Kingdom Come ecumenical global prayer movement, written by Archbishop Stephen Cotterell, focuses on The Lord’s Prayer.

Download the booklet here. https://www.thykingdomcome.global/resources/2025-novena-various-languages

In view of this focus on prayer, we will devote the first part of our 4pm service on Sunday 1 June, to prayers for peace, with particular focus on Palestine and Israel and on Ukraine and Russia. We will gather our prayers together into our Holy Communion, celebrating our peace with God, brought about through Jesus Christ.

Archbishop Stephen writes: “when we pray, ‘Thy kingdom come’, we are referring to God’s rule of justice and peace: that the servant-hearted leadership that we see in Jesus may be the hallmark of the leadership of the world.”

Here is a letter prepared by the Episcopal and Anglican English-speaking churches in Geneva, to which I have added my signature. In addition, I urge you to pray for our Jewish sisters and brothers living in our neighbourhoods and all around the world, who long for an end to the hostilities and for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Carolyn
