Preparing for La Côte Church Gift Day and Thanksgiving Service

Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

Gratitude gives us a new story.

It’s easy to lose sight of thankfulness, amid the stories of cruelty and divisive rhetoric which flood our newsfeeds. Yet maybe gratitude is exactly what we need to strengthen our resolve to love mercy, to act justly and to walk humbly with our God.

Here is a powerful word on gratitude from theologian and historian Dr. Diana Butler Bass:

“Being grateful does not “fix” anything. Pain, suffering, and injustice – these things are all real. They do not go away.
Gratitude, however, invalidates the false narrative that these things are the sum total of human existence, that despair is the last word.

Gratitude gives us a new story. It opens our eyes to see that every life is, in unique and dignified ways, graced… Your life. My life. We all share in the ultimate gift – life itself. Together. Right now.”

King David prays: “All things come from you – and of your own do we give you.” (1 Chronicles 29.14). He acknowledges that all we give to God has been entrusted to us in the first place, to bear witness to God’s never-ending creativity and imaginative grace.

So here is a first question in preparation for our Church Gift day: What gifts have you received in your unique personhood, that reflect God’s light and truth? Please take time to think about this and offer up your thoughts in thanksgiving and openness to God. Don’t be bashful and do be imaginative! Store your answers away somewhere… we will return to them in our Gift Day Worship!

Here is a prayer to start you off:

“Lord, you have given me so much; I ask for one more thing – a grateful heart.” Amen.

We hope you can join us for our La Côte Church Gift Day and Thanksgiving Service
