Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church

(Photo, Liz Bramley in the Holy Land)

Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

During Eastertide, leading up to our celebration of Jesus’ Ascension and the Feast of Pentecost, we are exploring the book of Acts, which is a sequel to Luke’s Gospel, authored by the same writer. The Good News of Jesus Christ did not end abruptly when he rose from death, but ushered in a new chapter, when by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ followers became Christ’s body on earth. There is a continuity from the people of God in the Old Testament, through to Jesus’ life and ministry in the Gospels and on to his followers who embody his risen life.

On Sunday we will recall Peter’s explanation to Jewish Christians that a vision from God had compelled him to share food and fellowship with Gentiles. He had come to understand that Jesus’ risen life was open for all – circumcised and uncircumcised!

Peter’s story raises questions for us about how we understand the extent of God’s mercy and where we build barriers instead of bridges in our relationships. As St Peter concluded, “If God gave them (the Gentiles) the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?” (Acts 11.17)

Who am I that I can hinder God? The words from the hymn, “There’s a wideness in God’s mercy”, can help us to pray about this question for our lives:

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in his justice,
Which is more than liberty...

But we make his love too narrow
By false limits of our own;
And we magnify his strictness
With a zeal he will not own.

For the love of God is broader
Than the scope of human mind,
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.
