Dear La Côte Church family and friends,
I have been on an interesting journey these last couple of weeks with a reading from the book of Acts which I suspect many of us have never really noticed: Peter’s raising of Tabitha (Acts 9: 36-43).
A reading we have never really noticed … or a reading we have blanked?
Because we are an Easter people, confident in our celebration of the resurrection of Jesus … but maybe a bit less at ease with other stories of people who miraculously return from the dead?
It is difficult, isn’t it? This is the problematic side of the ‘thin space’ we all long for. It is all well and good to talk about the places where Heaven and Earth come close, but we tend to imagine that this is somehow only ‘nice’ and ‘good’ – not mind-bendingly challenging.
I don’t have an answer unfortunately (unsurprisingly?), but I do have an observation: maybe it is not up to us to understand and resolve this mystery. Maybe it is beyond us. So rather than focusing on that which we cannot understand, maybe we should step back and engage with those things which are within our grasp.
Because aside from the raising of Tabitha from the dead, the story tells of a miracle performed by Peter – in a series of miracles performed by Peter. The same Peter, who, as Mike reminded us last Sunday, was a profoundly flawed human who had spectacularly failed, but who was now just faithfully putting one foot in front of the other – falling down, getting up, dreaming, walking. We can do that.
And the story tells us of Tabitha, a faithful disciple, despite her society’s prejudices and pressures, who ‘was devoted to good works and acts of charity’, caring for others despite everything. Probably also falling down, getting up, dreaming, walking. We can do that too.
We don’t understand and can’t explain everything, but we can engage with and respond to the bits we do.
Hallelujah, Christ is risen!
Chris Potter
