SWICE Newsletter

May 2025

Hello SWICE researchers,

In today's newsletter, we ponder the energy requirements of decent living, (re-)discover the latest SWICE & Lantern webinar on new working models, and take a look at the new pages of the SWICE website.

The countdown to our conference on the 4th of June has begun. We're looking forward to catching up with you!

Have a great day,
The SWICE Management Team

Next week we are heading to Winterthur for our annual conference!

We have an exciting agenda that will leave ample time for catching-up and networking:

🕘 Morning: Short presentations across all Working Packages that capture the breadth of SWICE research.

🕦 Late morning: parallel fishbowl discussions on Policies and Decision-support tools, with audience participation.

🕜 Afternoon: a World Café discussion on the impact of SWICE Living Labs + a workshop on a serious game for neighbourhood energy transition + a SWICE data workshop.

The full agenda is now online.

Registrations are closed, but if you haven't signed up and want to attend, you can write to Luisa and see if there are any last-minute available seats left.

Webinar

Our joint SWICE / Lantern webinar series "Living and working in the energy transition" is back!

In this episode, Evelyn Lobsiger, Sebastiano Maltese and Jana Z'Rotz discuss impacts of new working models on individuals and companies.

"Living and working in the energy transition" links SWICE and Lantern researchers to discuss their latest findings and big ideas on topics shared by both consortia.

Research corner

Energy requirements for securing wellbeing in Switzerland and the space for affluence and inequality

Joel Millward-Hopkins, Vivien Fisch-Romito, Sascha Nick and Emile Chevrel

This paper shows how, with a fairer distribution of energy, Switzerland could dramatically reduce energy consumption while securing wellbeing for all. The authors estimate that decent living energy (DLE) in 2050 would only represent 13% of Switzerland's 2019 consumption.

Investigation into Teleworking and its Relationships with Gender, Mobility, and Paid-Work-Life Balance
Jana Z'Rotz, Timo Ohnmacht and Patrick Rérat

This paper addresses gender differences in dealing with teleworking and their effects on everyday mobility by means of a cross-sectional survey. The results show gender-based differences in dealing with teleworking, attitudes to it and the use of time saved by not commuting.

Sector Coupling for Energy Communities: Synergies between Mobility and Heating Services

Cédric Terrier, Eduardo Antonio Pina, Dorsan Lepour and François Maréchal

Sector coupling is a central element for enhancing energy efficiency in urban areas. This paper aims to illustrate the sector coupling among an energy community, electric vehicle (EV), and an industrial site supplying waste heat.

We have to talk about overconsumption (in three different ways)
Joel Millward-Hopkins and Vivien Fisch-Romito

This article suggests three definitions for the concept of overconsumption, at individual, social, and planetary scales. These definitions can be used to determine thresholds beyond which consumption becomes useless, unfair, or unsustainable.

Our website is growing!

A new tab on our website lists all SWICE publications to date, including peer-reviewed papers, policy briefs, white papers, tools, models... come take a look ! 👀

Curious as to what is happening in Morges, Fribourg, Geneva, Risch-Rotkreuz and Winterthur? The website is also now equiped with individual pages on each of our Living Labs. 🏫

Finally, you may also notice that the Consortium tab has also been updated with some new faces! 😎
