Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter. The Church year revolves around two “cycles”, one for Christmas and one for Easter. The Christmas cycle begins with a season of preparation through Advent. The Easter cycle begins with a season of preparation through Lent.

Some common Lenten practices include prayer, almsgiving and fasting. One of my favourite books of prayers is entitled “Prayers for the Journey” by Fr James M. Fitzpatrick O.M.I. It contains prayers for each day of the year.

The introduction for the prayers in the first week in Lent starts with the well-known verses that are often read on Ash Wednesday: “Have mercy on me O God, according to your steadfast love…Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit in me” (Psalm 51: 1, 10).

Let me share with you the prayers for the first week starting from Sunday:

Sunday:
Your whole life, Lord, was a preparation for your passion, death and resurrection.
I now have these forty days of Lent to prepare myself to stand with you.
Help me to live these mysteries with a sense of fervour, gratitude and awe. Amen.

Monday:
He who is most powerful became a man of weakness.
He who is most loving became an object of hate.
He who is most blessed became as one cursed.
He who is most healing became a mass of wounds.
He who is most exalted became as one despised.
He who is most glorious became a thing of shame.
He is my God, my Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
In that saving and redeeming he gave his all. Amen.

Tuesday:
Lord, I have sinned, by thought and by deed, by word and by silence, by act and by omission. As often as I have sinned, you have stood ready to forgive. O gracious Lord, I thank you. Amen.

Wednesday:
Lord, I am tempted to turn from you.
Be now my strength that I may not sin.
Draw me back to stand by you,
and let not evil enter in. Amen.

Thursday:
Lord, I have sinned,
Love me still. Amen.

Friday:
Lord, in your life you changed sickness to health, sorrow to joy, death to life.
Change now in me those things which only your love can heal. Amen.

Saturday:
I thank you, Lord, for your forgiveness,
when I neglected you,
when I strayed from you,
when I offended you,
when I thought only of myself.
And now, Lord, it’s good to be back with you again. Amen.

Read each prayer a number of times. Let it speak to you to direct your mind, to touch your heart. Sit with it for a few minutes, then go beyond the words to take up your own thoughts leading to a conversation with God.

Important – Renewal of the Electoral Roll happening now!

Every six years, all churches and chaplaincies in the Church of England have to renew their Electoral Rolls. This means throwing the old one away and starting again!
2025 is one of those years, so even if you are on the Electoral Roll at the moment, you need to fill in a new form if you want to be on the Roll after 8 March 2025.

Thank you for supporting our RTS service on Sunday 2 March

Thank you to everyone in our community who contributed to last Sunday’s service through the music, liturgy, readings, translations and your prayerful presence. This was indeed a community offering to the wider audience on the radio, conveyed with a generous and worshipful spirit. A special thank you to many of you strong singers who congregated near the microphone at the front. Ably led by Richard, we made a joyful sound which came over well on the radio!

Our Lenten journey

Lenten Study Groups

This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed. Much of the global church is using this anniversary as an opportunity to breathe new life into the words of a creed which unites us. As Nicaea is in Iznik, in modern-day Turkey and therefore in our diocese in Europe, we have a unique and special reason to celebrate.

The aim of the course is to help us see afresh the faith which holds us together. Everyone is welcome, from complete beginners wondering about the Christian faith, to those with years of Christian practice.

There are two options for joining a study group locally:

  1. A Lenten Lunch and Study group on Fridays in Divonne during Lent
  2. An on-line Lenten study group on Tuesday evenings during Lent

See below for further details.
