Renewal of SPI's national status and support by SERI

On 19 December 2024, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI announced the renewal of SPI’s national status and an increased budget for the period 2025-2028. We are thankful for the renewed trust and the recognition of the important contributions of the Swiss polar and high-altitude science community.

SPI Flagship Initiatives: the call for pre-proposals is open!

SPI Flagship Initiatives 2025 call

The SPI Flagship Initiatives programme aims at enabling ambitious Swiss-led multi-annual and multidisciplinary research programmes in polar or remote high-altitude regions. The funding is focused on providing temporary infrastructure for a Swiss-led polar research programme, including field campaigns (logistics, safety, etc.), data management, outreach, and programme coordination.

Two online info events on 6 and 11 February will provide more details on the call, the various deadlines and the application process.

The submission deadline for pre-proposals is set to 30 April 2025. We look forward to your applications!

Field & Summer Schools for ECRs

SPI contributes to the cost related to the participation in field schools and training programmes to enable students and early-career scientists affiliated to a Swiss academic or research institution to acquire specialised experience and knowledge.

Health & Safety Trainings

Our next available training opportunity in collaboration with GRIMM:

Health and safety training for fieldwork
4-5 April 2025

A two-day course addressing the needs of scientific groups going into the field focuses on first aid practices in special conditions encountered in cold and remote regions

The autumn course will be held on 24-25 October 2025.

The training course for glaciated terrain will be held from 12 to 14 June 2025. The three-day course comprises an introduction to the use of technical equipment and basic knowledge on how to move safely on glaciers. Participants will also have the possibility to practice crevasse rescue techniques.

A new course in collaboration with the Advancing Field Safety programme, an initiative created by members of ETH Zurich, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the ADVANCEGeo Partnership:

Building a positive team culture for safe and effective fieldwork

Throughout this course, the participants will explore essential leadership and communication tools that empower every field team member, regardless of their role, to actively contribute to fostering a positive and supportive environment.

Swiss Polar Class • 21 March @ Museumsnacht, Bern

Swiss Polar Class treasure hunt

In collaboration with the ALPS Museum, the Swiss Polar Class will take part in the Museum Night in Bern. An expedition tent will welcome all curious visitors to explore polar stories and a new treasure hunt will challenge them to find their way through the Greenland ice sheet.

Swiss Polar Day 2025 – Save the date!

The Swiss Polar Day 2025 will take place on 5 September in Zurich. This event is the annual gathering of the Swiss polar science community and includes national and international keynotes, networking opportunities and updates on recent developments in polar research. This edition will also host the award ceremony of the Prix de Quervain dedicated this year to high-altitude research.

The venue and the programme will be published in due time.

Prix de Quervain 2025

The call for the Prix de Quervain is now open until 14 March 2025 and this year’s prize will be awarded during the Swiss Polar Day to outstanding research on topics relating to high altitude. We invite all students and early-career researchers to visit the Swiss Commission for Polar and High Altitude Research webpage for additional information and to submit their application.

Swiss participation in Horizon Europe

Researchers and innovators in Switzerland can now participate in Horizon Europe. Swiss entities can apply as Beneficiaries from programme year 2025 onward.

The Royal Society Newton International Fellowships

Swiss early-career researchers are welcome to apply to the Royal International Fellowships grant scheme. The programme provides support for outstanding early-career researchers to make a first step towards developing an independent research career through gaining experience across international borders. The application deadline is set to 18 March 2025.

25th Swiss Global Change Day

The Swiss Global Change Day is the annual event organised by ProClim where well-known experts present challenges and highlights of climate and global change research covering a broad range of topics. It is also an opportunity to present research results through posters and to discuss them with colleagues. The deadline for submitting your poster is 27 March 2025, 12:30 (noon, Swiss time).
