portraits of John Sayles

As the winter was approaching, I traveled to Bologna to photograph director and writer John Sayles for an interview (paywall) for the The Daily Telegraph, in which he discusses his career and his new novel; a story of Native American boys who were sent to Carlisle Indian school in Pennsylvania, US.

Portraits of Heikki Salonen

My 2025 kicked off with an assignment in Florence, Italy, for Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat. You always learn new things from the assignments (or when preparing to them), and this time I had a mini crash course on fashion—more specifically on Maison Margiela, that, I learned, is famous for NOT having the creator / main designer in the spotlight. In fact, the founder of the Maison, Martin Margiela, has never given any personal interviews, nor has he agreed to have his photo taken.
The brand has a diffusion line called MM6, the current creative director of which is Finnish fashion designer Heikki Salonen. Recently, Mr Salonen gave an interview to Helsingin Sanomat (in Finnish; paywall), however, not to talk about his position and MM6, but his work and career in fashion in general. And, in line with the brand philosophy, Mr Salonen didn't want me to photograph him while the team was preparing their MM6 fashion show for Pitti Uomo, but only take portraits of him outside.
Portraits of Gustavo Dudamel

Few days ahead of Christmas I took the train to Rome to photograph Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel for an interview (paywall) for The Daily Telegraph. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to photograph during the rehearsal, but sitting and enjoying classical music for a while before the actual work was a superb bonus to the day.

Turin Shroud research team

When the summer 2024 was nearly over, I flew to Bari in Southern Italy to photograph for The Daily Telegraph the small research team—Liberato De Caro, Cinzia Giannini, Rocco Lassandro—that say to have established (paywall) that the Turin Shroud really is nearly 2,000 years old. For what/whom the cloth has been used for, and how the image on it has originated is another question though.

Day rate data

The following basically doesn't apply to Italy, because as you might know, Italian publications don't really hire photojournalists (none of the Italian newspapers have staff photographers, and they don't hire freelance photojournalists for occasional gigs either—only wire subscriptions and free stuff): last year, Women Photograph conducted a rate survey among our members around the world, and the results were published in November. Some of the results are in the images above, and more data can be found here.

And speaking of Women Photograph: have you already requested access to the private photographer database? If not, you can do so here.

Let's be in touch soon! A presto! Ollaan pian yhteydessä!
