Dear La Côte Church family and friends,
The season of Epiphany invites us to search for light shining out from the shadows, revealed in the Word made Flesh. The practice of fixing our gaze on Jesus the Christ will inspire and guide us in the macro and micro stories of our lives.
We await the impact of the new administration in the US on individual lives, as well as on wider global issues that touch us all. Epiphany draws us in humility to worship God in Christ, even when uncertainties swirl around us. We open our lives afresh to God made manifest in Jesus the Son.
Next Sunday reveals God’s compassion and mercy for those “whose backs are against the wall” as African American theologian Howard Thurman put it. Jesus stood up and dramatically read out his Gospel manifesto in his hometown synagogue in Nazareth. His inaugural speech set the pattern of his mission. It is a useful benchmark for all in leadership both in the Church and in the world that Christ came to redeem. I invite you to read it prayerfully, maybe using these questions to guide you:
a. Where do you position yourself as you receive Jesus’ prophetic words? As one whose back is against the wall, or referring to others who are trapped in this place today?
b. How do Jesus’ words bring you comfort? In what ways do they challenge you?
c. How can we as a church community be Good News as Jesus proclaims it?
d. I encourage you to pray for Sabbath rest in God’s release and restoration today.
Luke 4.14-21 – Jesus Gospel Manifesto
14Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.
He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
