Dear La Côte Church friends and family,
Last Sunday Richard Hawkings, a research physicist at the CERN particle physics laboratory, showed us this image of the iconic “Pillars of Creation”, which were captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. In these rock-like yet permeable formations, new stars are forming within dense clouds of gas and dust. A mind-boggling glimpse of the mysteries of creation.
Richard reflected on the wonder of a Cosmic Creator God who still longs for intimacy with humanity. The writer of Psalm 8 wrestles with this question: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have ordained, what are mortals, that you should be mindful of them; mere human beings, that you should seek them out?”
Yet the bedrock of our Christian faith is that the Cosmic Creator God longs for communion with us, mediated through Jesus Christ, and sustained by the life of God’s Spirit.
Our confirmation service on Sunday offers us a sacrament to say yes to this relationship and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Please pray for our candidates, aged from 12 +, who are taking this next step, that they will put down deep roots of faith and grow in loving discipleship.
Here are their names in alphabetical order:
Daniel Carpenter, Virginia Doss, Margot Giraud-Guigues, Jared Gosal, Isaac Gosal, Marijke Huet, Penelope Martinez, Phoebe Martinez, Zarah Ijeabalaum Okoli, Victor Ikenna Okoli, Emma Ryves, Thelma Smith and Isaac Whetham.
Here is a prayer that Bishop Alison will offer for them, asking for the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit to fill them and sustain them. Please use this to pray for them and for each one of us.
Almighty and ever-living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen.
Carolyn Cooke
