We trust this email finds you well. Last month, we held the Swiss Polar Day at the University of Fribourg and wish to thank all those who attended and contributed to the day. The photographs and presentations are now available on the event webpage.

The next call for proposals for the SPI Flagship Initiatives will open on 3 February 2025. With a similar structure to current Flagship Initiatives, the new calls will be aligned with the environmental aspects already in place with 2024 calls.
Two info events on 6 and 11 February 2025 will provide more details on the call and the application process. The pre-proposals deadline is 30 April 2025.
More information will follow soon. In the meantime, we invite all interested scientists to already book their calendars and bookmark the SPI Flagship Initiatives' webpage →

Antarctica InSync – website & presentation at Swiss Polar Day
Antarctica InSync launched its website offering a thorough overview of the multiannual international programme. The programme was also presented to the Swiss polar science community during the Swiss Polar Day by Alexander Haumann (AWI). You can access his presentation here (pdf, 5.01Mb) →
Swiss researchers will actively contribute to the Ocean, Atmosphere, Ice Sheet, and Sea Ice expert working groups, with SPI supporting Swiss participation as an institutional partner ensuring coordination and regular exchange between the delegates.

The Mertz Fellowship is open until 31 October 2024, 23:00 CET.
Dedicated to PhD students and ECRs based in Switzerland or Australia, the fellowship supports their active involvement in polar and high-altitude research through short-term exchange visits and joint projects.

SPI contributes to the cost related to the participation in field schools and training programmes to enable students and early-career scientists affiliated to a Swiss academic or research institution to acquire specialised experience and knowledge.
Next opportunity: the 9th EGU Snow Science Winter School from 23 February to 1 March 2025, Col du Lautaret, France. Application deadline is set to 1 November 2025.

Our next available training opportunity in collaboration with GRIMM:
A two-day course addressing the needs of scientific groups going into the field focuses on first aid practices in special conditions encountered in cold and remote regions.
Next year, the courses will take place on 4-5 April and 24-25 October 2025.

Greenland. Everything changes opens on 25 October and is designed as a moving film installation presenting the changes currently transforming the societal, economical and natural landscapes of this ice-capped island. The temporary exhibition is curated and hosted by the ALPS Museum in Bern, with SPI being one of the project partners. A series of events will also invite visitors to (re)discover the exhibition through various perspectives.

The EU-funded project POLARIN coordinated by AWI is an international network of polar research infrastructures and their services, and aiming at addressing the scientific challenges of the polar regions.
Swiss researchers are welcome to apply to the network's Transnational Access call for proposals for access to 49 research infrastructures in both polar regions.
The deadline for submissions is 28 November 2024, 16:00 CET. The access decisions will be announced in mid-March 2025.

The IASC Fellowship Program launched by International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) is meant to engage early-career researchers in the work of the five IASC Working Groups (WG): Atmosphere WG, Cryosphere WG, Marine WG, Social & Human WG and Terrestrial WG.
The Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for early-career researchers to become involved in leading-edge scientific activities at a circum-Arctic and international level, to build an international network, and also to develop management skills.

CAS Montreux film on their Greenland expedition
The Youth section of the Club Alpin Suisse Montreux will present their film about the citizen science project they conducted in 2023 in southwestern Greenland in the context of SPI's Flagship Initiative GreenFjord. The film screening will be in French and will take place on 15 November at 20:00 at the Hollywood Cinema in Montreux.
