Dear La Côte family and friends,

Rain only falls during a few months each year in Israel. During the dry season, people in the ancient Near East relied on either water stored in cisterns, or where possible, water flowing from a natural spring.

When rain did fall, it seemed like a miraculous gift from God. After a season of rain, brown barren hills were covered in green meadows and flowers, and lush vegetation bordered rivers.

From this seasonal change arose the idea of living water which refers to water in the form of rain or running water from a spring. It is water which comes directly from God, not carried by human hands or stored in cisterns. Living water was strongly associated with the presence of God. Many times in the Bible God is referred to as the source of living water, physically and spiritually.

Humanity is part of God’s created world. We are called to enjoy our existence and lead fulfilling lives to the glory of God, using the world’s resources wisely and respectfully.  This includes water, which is an essential component of all life, and which operates regardless of political and social realities.

The theme running through the next three Sundays in September will be ‘God’s precious gift of water.’ This is to celebrate Creationtide, together with the worldwide church. We will be encouraged to reflect on H2O from different angles and perspectives, through liturgy, Scripture readings, music, sermons, prayers, Sunday Club activities and creative workshops.

“And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift.” Revelation 22:17b
