Dear La Côte family and friends, The phrase “render unto Caesar” comes from the well-known statement by Jesus in Matthew 22:17-21 which is part of the lectionary gospel passage for this coming Sunday. Jesus is questioned about paying taxes to Caesar. We are invited by the passage to reflect on our responsibilities to earthly authorities and on our ultimate allegiance to God. Jesus’ words encourage us to consider what we owe to governments and society, but also to consider what it means to offer our whole selves to God. Jesus used the visual aid of a denarius coin. Just as the coin bears Caesar’s image, human beings bear the image of their Creator. Our choices through our worship and through our relationships with others and our service to them are part of our response to God’s gracious love. We are called to live responsibly in the world without allowing worldly powers and loyalties to take the place of God in our hearts. We are called to live faithfully in the world with our hearts centred on God.
