Dear La Côte family and friends,
As we continue with our delving into the gospel of Matthew, we are encouraged to remember that Jesus is always with us, even in the midst of the storms that happen in our lives. Storms may come as illness, uncertainty, the loss of a job, broken relationships, bereavement, or simply the pressures of daily living.
In this Sunday’s gospel passage, the disciples are tossed by the wind and waves and Peter discovers how easily fear can overwhelm faith. Yet His desperate cry, “Lord, save me!” is met immediately by Jesus’ outstretched hand. The storm is real, but Christ’s presence is there. He never abandons those who call on him, even if the storm persists.
Our second Scripture passage on Sunday comes from Psalm 85. It echoes the disciples’ encounter with Jesus in the storm with a vision of God's faithful presence, declaring, "Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other." God's desire is not simply to calm the storm around us but to establish within us the peace that comes from trusting in his steadfast love.
Whatever challenges we face this week, may we hear Jesus’ words afresh, the words he spoke to his disciples,“Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Our hope lies in his presence. His hand gives us the strength we need to get through the storm. He guides us with and towards his peace.
And may God give us the grace to notice his presence in the ordinary moments of each day, to receive with gratitude the gifts that draw us closer to him, and to walk with confidence wherever Christ calls us.
