The apostle St Peter - Rubens

Two weeks ago we held our Annual General Meeting, which, aside from usual matters of finance and legal governance, showcased all that our church family does - and all that it hopes to do - as we journey on together. In our service beforehand, Carolyn preached on the four holy habits on which we can build our journeys of faith and which strengthen our church community - Apostles’ teaching, Fellowship (life together as a community), Breaking of Bread (either as part of fellowship or in worship) and Prayer. Pride comes before a fall and all that, but we seem to be doing ok! I never thought I’d be excited by an AGM …

This Sunday, the readings (John 14:15-21, Acts 17:22-31) will allow us to think some more about the community of followers of Jesus – those who are obedient to His commands and who are helped by the Holy Spirit, sent from God. And who are sent out, like Saint Paul, to share with the world. Because the church family is not static, and despite our legal form as an association, it is not a club. And it is not (just) about meeting in a pointy-roofed building… Each of us is a member of this church family. Each BELONGS to that family, and each has a unique part to play as a member of that family. The annual report was a testament to that. The holy habits which make for a strong church family begin with teaching and learning – learning the ways of Jesus and His commandments. Like any family, its members grow as they learn from each other, the younger from the older but also the older from the younger. With this teaching and sharing, each member of the family (hopefully) finds herself or himself BECOMING more Christ-like, which is our calling. But this isn’t the end – the church family is dynamic – by their lives, their actions, their words, each member of the church family goes out BEARING witness to God’s love for the world in their jobs, schools, sports clubs and friend groups. Scary, but essential. Remember, God has no hands but yours, no feet but yours … BELONGING – BECOMING – BEARING This is our calling as the church family of La Côte. More on Sunday … Chris Potter
