WEEKLY BULLETIN

Meeting God at death's door

Signs of spring in March (Betty Talbot)

Dear La Côte family and friends,

This Sunday is the fifth Sunday of Lent, and the beginning of Passiontide.  We will be looking at the gospel narrative of the raising of Lazarus.  This story fits naturally into the spiritual movement of Lent and especially Passiontide because it stands at the threshold of our Lord’s journey towards the cross.

The raising of Lazarus is the final and greatest “sign” done by Jesus. Immediately after this miracle, the religious authorities begin to plan His death. So the event becomes the turning point that leads directly to the Passion. In the context of Lent, this reminds believers that Jesus’ path to the cross was not accidental, but unfolded through His mission to bring life to humanity.

During Lent, Christians reflect on sin, death, and redemption. In this passage Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Before he faces death, Jesus demonstrates his authority over it. The raising of Lazarus anticipates the Resurrection, showing that the cross will not be the end.

Although Passiontide focuses more intensely on Christ’s suffering and the events leading to Holy Week, it is also a Lenten call to spiritual awakening, about conversion and renewal. Lazarus coming out of the tomb points to Christ calling people out of the “tombs” of sin, despair and spiritual death into new life! Hallelujah!
