This year, SPI turns 10! There is a lot to look forward to, please scroll down to the events section to discover what we have in store. We also invite you to save the date for this year's Swiss Polar Day that will take place on 9 September in Sion. This newsletter edition also brings you an overview of the current calls such as the Polar Access Fund and PolARTS that are closing soon, the SCPH calls for Swiss representation in IASC and SCAR, as well as other funding and training opportunities, and open positions. Two new SPI Flagship Initiatives have been selected

Following the second call for proposals launched in 2025, two SPI Flagship Initiatives have been selected for funding. These Swiss-led multi-annual programmes will combine an interdisciplinary approach and cutting-edge science. They aim to investigate critical changes in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and to bring better understanding of the far-reaching implications these two regions have for the global climate. Co-funded by SPI and BNP Paribas Swiss Foundation, the Polar Access Fund aims to provide field access to a new generation of polar researchers, thus enabling successful applicants to gain critical experience in leading fieldwork and supporting their professional development.

PolARTS: Apply by 31 January

PolARTS is a joint initiative by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Polar Institute to encourage exchange and to foster collaboration between art and science. The PolARTS initiative supports up to three tandems composed of an artist and a polar scientist over a period of 12 to 18 months, and opens a space for new explorative practices and transdisciplinarity.

The course is organised in collaboration with the Advancing Field Safety programme, an initiative created by members of ETH Zurich, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the ADVANCEGeo Partnership.

Polar Bear Safety

For scientists working in northern regions the presence of polar bears is a risk that should not be underestimated. For this reason, SPI collaborates with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Germany to make training courses about polar bear awareness and handling of weapons available to Swiss-based scientists. Antarctica InSync will host two global webinars on 20 & 21 January 2026 to present draft White Papers for scientific planning and invite feedback from the wider scientific community. These events are designed to foster dialogue across the international science community and disciplines as the White Papers progress toward final publication. To the webinars →

SCPH Open call – Swiss representation in IASC Working Groups & Standing Committee on Indigenous Involvement

The Swiss Commission for Polar and High Altitude Research (SCPH) invites expressions of interest to strengthen Switzerland’s representation in the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). IASC coordinates and advances international Arctic research through its Working Groups and standing committees, and Swiss representatives play a key role in connecting our community to these activities.

As Switzerland’s national adhering body to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the Swiss Commission for Polar and High Altitude Research (SCPH) invites expressions of interest for the following roles:

  1. SCAR Standing Scientific Group – Physical Sciences (SSG-PS): Swiss National Representative
  2. SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information (SCAGI): Swiss member (national contact)

UZH Open call – Leading House Asia Pacific Funding Call 2025

The call provides seed-funding support for joint research projects, policy engagement and PhD mobility between Switzerland and the Asia-Pacific. Applications are welcome from Swiss-based researchers to collaborate with research, policy or innovation partners in any of the Asia-Pacific countries that form part of the Leading House mandate. The 2025 call offers two funding lines, a Scientific Collaboration Fund and a Mobility Fund. Application deadline is 8 March 2026 (17:00 CET). More information →

Joint Indo-Swiss Research Calls

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), together with Indian partner institutions, has recently launched two joint Indo-Swiss calls for applications under the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP). These calls offer concrete opportunities to deepen research collaboration between Switzerland and India around shared priorities.

European Polar Board (EPB): EU Call for evidence – EU Arctic policy

EPB shared the below information on EU calls for evidence relevant to polar research and/or polar regions.  

EU Arctic policy – Update: deadline 16 March 2026 (4000 characters limit, EPB will participate)

Marine environment protection – revision of EU rules: deadline 9 March 2026 (4000 characters limit, EPB will participate)

Open position – Senior postdoc / scientist at the Earth Systems Science Lab, University of Zurich

The position is in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning / biosphere science, starting 1 April 2026 for 2 years, with option for prolongation. The Environmental Computational Science and Earth Observation Laboratory (ECEO) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the framework of the project GreenLight (Shedding light on the darkening of the Greenland Ice Sheet: From microbes to ice melt and potential solutions), at the interface between microbiology, glaciology and Earth observation. Open position – Doctorate in Glaciology in modelling firn changes at the glacier scale at VAW Glaciology, ETH Zurich

Four-year PhD position in “Modelling firn changes at the glacier scale”, fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, within the deFIRN project. Start date: Ideally 1 April.
This PhD will be based at ETH Zurich (VAW Glaciology) in collaboration with WSL/SLF and the University of Fribourg, and embedded in one of the world’s leading glaciology research groups. The project focuses on understanding how climate-driven firn transitions affect glacier mass balance, surface energy balance, albedo, and future water resources in the Swiss Alps and Central Asia. To the full description →

Over four days, this year’s Swiss Polar Festival embarked nearly 900 visitors on a journey of discovery from the high peaks of Pamir Mountains to the Rhone River and its microscopic world of plankton. The festival offered a rich variety of scientific outreach activities through engaging formats in collaboration with various partners. Read more →
