Dear La Côte friends and family,

Each year, Christians around the world set aside time for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.  This usually takes place during January 18 to 25. During this special week, believers from many different Christian traditions, be they Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Protestant, Evangelical, and others, come together in prayer.

The purpose is simple but profound – to pray that all who follow Jesus Christ may grow in unity, just as Jesus prayed in the Gospel of John, “that they may all be one.”

The theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity this year is taken from Ephesians 4:4, “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.” These words of St Paul see the unity of the community of believers as a vocation, a calling by the Holy Spirit.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is not about ignoring our differences, but is about focusing on what unites us in Christ, namely love, humility, repentance, and a shared mission to witness to the Gospel in the world.

Our unity is not something we create ourselves but it is a gift from God. As we take part in this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, we ask God to heal divisions, soften hearts, and help us grow in mutual respect and cooperation, so that our Christian witness may be more faithful and more credible.
