Enola on the Move – Christmas Between the Canaries and the Caribbean...
(...with a twist)
While many people are lighting candles at home, looking for the perfect gift or baking exquisite Christmas cookies, SV Enola has been preparing for something truly special: her first ever Atlantic crossing.
After spending several weeks in Horta (Faial, Azores) and the Canary Islands, carrying out final checks, maintenance, provisioning, weather planning and countless other tasks, the mood on board has shifted to one word: departure.
Initially, we were planning to embark on this crossing in early December, but an unfortunate encounter with an uncharted submerged rock south east of Santa Luzia (Cape Verde)* forced us to stop in Mindelo for some repairs.
We will go into more detail about what happened in the next newsletter, but while none of the crew were injured and despite managing to divert the boat in time for no futher harsh consequences, damage to the skeg and the rudder meant that Enola had to be taken out of the water.
For now, we would like to emphasise the incredible response of our visiting crew, who helped us handle this incident with great spirit, calmness, and invaluable collaboration. Sailing is always an adventure, but having an awesome crew is a blessing when things go wrong. So our special thanks here go to Gwen, Marco, Benedikt, David and Thibault. 🙏

* Notice to mariners and our contribution to safer sailing around Cape Verde: the exact location of this rock, always submerged, is 16°43.8'N / 024°42.3'W. Value of sounding < 2m.
This info is also being transmitted to TimeZero and Navionics to update their charts.
