The crown of thorns and crown of glory, Malcolm Guite

Dear La Côte Church family and friends, on Sunday the cycle of our Christian year draws to a close with the Feast of Christ the King. The clashing mix of images in our readings reminds us that although Christ “ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father,” he was equally “crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered death and was buried.” (The Nicene Creed). We read in Philippians: “though he was in the form of God, … he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.”

Christ’s kingship led him on a path of letting go of status, political power, wealth and popularity. John Pritchard, former bishop of Oxford and prolific Christian writer, invites us to see in The Beatitudes an encouragement to “let go” of behaviours that inhibit our lives.

I invite you to use this meditation to help you pray about this theme of letting go in order to welcome what God’s blessings.

Blessed are the poor in spirit…
who let go of their need to be somebody special, to have status or recognition or celebrity…
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn…
who learn how to let go of the pain of bereavement, inch by inch, drop by drop…
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek…
who let go of the need to be right all the time, so hard in a self-assertive culture…
for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…
who let go of their addiction to themselves and turn outwards to the needs of the world…
for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful…
who let go of the age-old need for revenge…
for they will receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart…
who let go of the need to look good, but want to help others look good instead…
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers…
who let go of the need to win, but seek win-win solutions…
for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake…
who let go of a safety-first, no-risk approach to life and faith…
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

God of blessing, thank you for showing us the way of love and letting go, in your Son, Christ our King. Give us grace to walk this same path wherever it goes, trusting that you are always with us and leading us home. Amen.
