Poppies above Lac Leman, May 2023, Carolyn

Dear La Côte Church family and friends,

This coming Sunday we continue with our season of remembering, by focusing on those who have died through conflict, both past and present. Remembrance Sunday invites us to wrestle with issues of war and peace, loss and self-gift, memory and forgetting.

We will observe two minutes of silence, following well-known words from the poem, “For the Fallen”, by Laurence Binyon:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

We will remember them, lest we forget. In silence we will remember the tragic loss of life, the pain and destruction caused by wars past and present. We will seek to honour the courage and sacrifice of so many to restore peace and freedom. We will resolve to seek peace in our personal lives and relationships as well as in the wider spheres of church, community and society.

Our Sunday Gospel reading will focus on the song which burst forth from Zechariah, at the birth of his son John (later known as John the Baptist). It is a song which speaks of God visiting the earth in a new way, raising up a saviour to set people free from the sin that separates us from God and from one another. I vividly recall Revd Canon Malcom Rogers speaking about this canticle, from St Andrew’s Moscow, during an online service soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In quiet, I invite you to read and pray with this song of promise and hope, in Luke 1.67-79.

O Holy, Redeeming One,

may the Spirit who so inspired Zechariah,

give light today to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

and guide our feet into the way of peace.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, Amen.

Carolyn Cooke
